One of the intrigues that has flared up behind the scenes in F1 in recent weeks is the question of the future of the great engineer Adrian Newey. Many respectable sources write that after 19 seasons the Briton will leave the Red Bull team.
German publication Auto Motor und Sport, which does not usually share dubious information, reports that Newey has already agreed to leave Red Bull, and an official announcement will follow soon. It is not so clear in which team the engineer will continue his work, but it is known that he wants to stay in the F1 championship. So far, 12 Constructors’ Cups and 13 drivers’ titles have been won with the F1 cars created by Newvi.
Rumor has it that Lawrence Stroll offered Newey an opportunity to earn $100 million for an as-yet-unknown period. Currently, his salary is 10 million per year, writes “La Gazzetta dello Sport”. In addition, the Aston Martin team is based near Red Bull, so nothing would change much in Newvey’s life outside of his work duties. The experienced and fast Fernando Alonso has extended his contract with Aston Martin, but from 2026 the team will start using Honda engines. Also, Stroll has made large financial investments in infrastructure, a completely new F1 factory also opened last year.
It is not the first time that “Ferrari” tries to seduce Newvia, but then they would have to move to Italy.
Once in the “Williams” team in the early nineties, Newey worked together with pilot Riccardo Patresi, who expressed the following opinion to “Gazzetta dello Sport” about the aerodynamics specialist’s possible joining of “Ferrari”: “He is a first-class engineer. Where he goes, the team wins. It remains to be seen whether he will actually come. I know him personally very well, because we are friends from the Williams days. And I know he loves his home in Britain very much. So I’m not sure if he would leave Red Bull to go to Ferrari.”
Newey has a contract until 2025, however, the experienced specialist is not at all satisfied with the internal scandals that have overshadowed the Red Bull team this season. There is a version that Newey could go on leave for the next year to join another team in 2026, when the new era of technical regulations begins.
Meanwhile, Dutch F1 personality Frans Verschoor said in the “F1 aan Tafel” program: “Adrian is only in the Red Bull team because of the name. If they let him leave, the team will at least save on salary. Pierre Vache is actually the man who builds the machines, not Newey. But his time has also passed. Just like I think Lewis Hamilton’s time has passed.”
