This photo is the first of a series of photos taken by Associated Press photographers that won first place Thursday in a contest sponsored by the Missouri School of Journalism’s Reynolds Institute for Journalism. It shows the body of 22-year-old Shani Luke in the back of a pick-up truck with a militant resting his leg on her bare back.

The girl’s father, Nisim, said: “It’s good that the photo won an award. This is one of the most important photographs of the last 50 years. It is history. In 100 years, they will look and know what happened here,” the DailyMail writes.

He expressed his firm belief that his daughter’s photo will leave a mark in human history, considering it a symbol of the current era and hopefully serving as documentation for future generations.

“Photographs of violence and death can be valuable or important when they humanize the dead or galvanize society,” said Hen Mazig, a senior fellow at the Tel Aviv Institute, in a post on X, which has been liked by thousands of people.

Meanwhile, many journalists say that war photos, and sometimes the worst photos, are an important way for the public to learn about conflicts.

“The photo of Hamas terrorists with Luke’s body in the back of a pickup truck is truly disturbing,” Michelle Frankfurter, a documentary photographer who teaches at the Corcoran School of Art and Design, said in an email.
