Police manage to solve a 40-year-old murder case thanks to chewing gum

--

In 1980, a cold-blooded murder was committed in the USA. A female student was killed on campus in Oregon State. For years, investigators could not find the killer. Well, after 40 years it finally worked. Interestingly, a small piece of chewing gum helped to solve the case, reports “Daily Star”.

According to a medical examiner’s report, student Barbara May Tucker was sexually assaulted and then beaten to death.

Prolonged investigations were unable to solve this murder case. It seemed that it would remain so and the culprit would not be found.

The attacker had left his DNA on the victim’s body, but investigators were unable to determine who the DNA sample belonged to.

In 2021, the genealogist suspected that 60-year-old Robert Plimpton, who lives in Oregon, may have committed the murder. Although he did not have immediately obvious evidence that it was Robert who committed the murder, the expert decided to continue the investigation.

He tracked down Robert. Seeing the man drop the chewing gum on the ground, he hurriedly picked it up and went to the laboratory. When comparing the killer’s and Robert’s DNA sample, they showed a 100% match. The killer was Robert.

When a DNA match emerged, police immediately arrested Robert.

The judge found that Roberts had no prior convictions because prosecutors had not clearly established that he was the one who committed the crime.

It is not yet clear what Robert’s sentence will be. The court hearing will take place in June.
