Last December, Ieva and Tomas Hendriks Ilvesi announced their divorce. Until now, the couple did not publicly comment on the divorce, but in an interview with the “Ieva” publication, the now ex-wife of the former president of Estonia told what twists and turns in life led to such a decision.

She says that the couple was unable to find the motivation to solve problems that had been brewing for years, which “Ieva’s work in Ukraine put the finishing touches on”.

But it is clear that during these years I did not get myself a real marriage partner.

“I feel like I married the president, and Thomas remained the president for the rest of his life in this marriage. It’s a title for life, of course, but it’s important for me to have a partner in my life. I missed that for many years,” says Ilvesa.

She reveals that although she herself had been aware of the troubles of the marriage for several years, Thomas had initiated the divorce. However, officially the couple is still together: “The marriage is not divorced yet, it is going quite hard at the moment, and some issues will have to be resolved in court.”
