Expert: What to do so that the stork does not nest on the chimney of the house, but chooses another place

--

Of course, the situation is completely different if “the nest has already been built and the eggs have been laid in it or the babies have already hatched, then the situation is different. Then it would be preferable to wait until the storks leave the nest after the nesting season, and it should be demolished afterwards,” explains Janaus.

The white stork monitoring manager has a recommendation on how to prevent stork nests from being built on the chimney.

“In order to prevent such situations in the future, it is necessary to make it physically impossible to build a nest on the chimney by fixing various types of vertical structures on it. For example, as in one of the visible options – with a metal grid fixed arch-like above the chimney. You can definitely come up with some other mechanical solution.”

White stork monitoring manager Janaus emphasizes that the main thing is to make it impossible for storks to land on the relevant chimney and for tree branches to fall from it.

“If you want storks to nest on the property, you have to offer them an alternative. It would be best to choose a place that both residents and birds like. I do not recommend in the countryside close to the house. You can bury a post there with a stable artificial base of the nest, entwining some coarser tree branches into it. You can fix the artificial nest base on a building, for example, a shed, barn, etc. Unfortunately, there is no 100% guarantee that the storks will accept it right away. But it would be worth trying,” explains Janaus.

Other interested parties, regardless of age, are also invited to participate in the census of white stork nests. Those who wish to participate in data collection are invited to send a message to e-mail: [email protected]apply for a square to be surveyed and register your observations about white stork nests and life in them on the nature observation portal Dabasdati.lv or in the data entry form here.

The rules of the contest “Stork’s Diary” are available here.

The contest “Stork’s Diary” is one of the activities of the Latvian Ornithological Society’s project “From the White Stork’s Nest to Youth Environmental Activism”. The project is financially supported by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund and the German Nature Conservation Association.

On the other hand, we invite students to participate in the competition here.
