Bitcoin, one of the most popular cryptocurrencies, has reached a new peak. Just on May 5, the number of transactions made on the Bitcoin network reached one billion. This happened 15 years, four months and four days after Bitcoin’s creator, under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, released the Bitcoin software.
Since its launch on January 3, 2009, the Bitcoin network has processed an average of 178,475 transactions per day. It should be mentioned, however, that this number does not include transactions made on the “Lightning” network. It is Bitcoin’s second layer payment protocol, which allows for faster transactions. It is estimated that since its creation in January 2018, several hundred million transactions have been carried out on the Lightning network.
It is true that even though Bitcoin is the oldest cryptocurrency network, it is not the first in which the number of transactions has reached one billion. Etherscan data confirms that over two billion transactions have been processed on the network of Bitcoin’s biggest competitor, Ethereum, since its launch in July 2015.
