Richard Lee McNav – a man who managed to escape from American prisons three times

On April 5, 2006, Richard managed to escape from a prison located in Louisiana. McNair worked in prison for good behavior, his duties included working in the production area – repairing old mail bags, sewing and sorting correspondence.

The criminal performed his duties honorably for several months while thinking of an escape plan. He escaped by hiding in a specially designed mailbag to which he attached a breathing tube, hiding his bag under a pile of mailbags.

A pallet of mail bags was taken to a warehouse outside the prison grounds, when the staff went to lunch, McNair freed himself and fled, knowing that he would not be searched for at least five hours.

Richard was soon apprehended by the police, but did not realize he was an escaped felon because McNair gave a fake name, joked with the police, told them he had come to Alexandria to help rebuild roofs after the hurricane.

The arrest and release after a ten-minute conversation was captured on a police camera, but no one blamed the patrol officers for the incident, as the prisoner’s photo was of very poor quality and was taken less than a year ago.

Police officer Bordelon explains in “Escape from Prison” that the reason for the release was also the fact that the prison authorities said that they were not completely sure that McNair had really escaped. Similarly, the criminal’s behavior is completely different from the portrait of the person sent out from prison – created by the psychologist.

Photos of the man were often shown on TV, calling him one of America’s 15 most dangerous criminals. The prisoner traveled to Canada and back to America several times without attracting the attention of law enforcement officers. He was caught on October 25, 2007 – during an unplanned police raid.

During his life, Makner escaped from imprisonment three times using creative, unusual methods.
