Polish Foreign Minister Radoslav Sikorski said that Donald Trump’s position on the Ukraine issue “is not as black and white as some people think”, writes “Politico”.
However, Sikorsky argued that the picture is much more nuanced. “Donald Trump was right to encourage all of us in Europe to spend more on defense,” he said in an interview, adding that the former US president also sent anti-tank missiles to Ukraine “before the war, when others didn’t.”
There are signs that Poland’s efforts could result in a change in Trump’s thinking. After meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda in New York earlier this month, Trump said Ukraine’s “survival and strength” was important to the US and that he fully supported Poland.
Sikorsky also pointed out that Trump’s choice not to protest aid to Ukraine shows that the former president’s attitude towards Kyiv is already changing. “I didn’t hear any protest,” the minister said. “So I hope that candidate Trump has seen that this opposition to helping Ukraine is actually not popular in the United States, that it’s hurting his chances” of being re-elected.
