Volkswagen is trying to regain its position in China and comes up with a radical ID.Code concept

--

For years, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen could be proud of the status of the market leader in the huge Chinese market, however, the extremely rapid growth of domestic car manufacturers does not allow VW to rest on its laurels. What about laurels, VW has already lost its position as the market leader in China, so the company has come up with a quite radical ID.Code concept, which introduces a completely new Volkswagen design direction. At least for now only for China and not for the whole world.

This SUV-Coupe-style concept gives a glimpse of future models that are being developed in collaboration between Volkswagen and several of their partners in China, said Volkswagen brand chief Thomas Schaefer.

It is based on a yet-to-be-publicly named platform, but the manufacturer reports that the cars will be able to be equipped with one electric motor at the rear or two electric motors for all-wheel drive. Different battery versions are also expected. The ID.Code concept in its serial version will become the new Volkswagen flagship in China.

With this concept, Volkswagen drastically changes its direction directly in design, offering a new style. The manufacturer believes that with this offer they will be able to appeal to younger buyers in China. Andreas Mindt, the automaker’s design director, says that in this concept, Volkswagen chose to go a much more expressive way than with previous ID models.

Although all this is planned for the Chinese, at least for the time being, sources close to Volkswagen report that conversations can already be heard in the corridors of the Wolfsburg offices about how and how much these cars intended for China can influence the models planned for the European market. Mindts also does not deny that a serial version of the ID.Code concept could be offered in other markets in the future, but for now it is planned for China. He also says that the ID.2all concept demonstrates the intended design evolution of the European models, yet they offer a more conservative, traditional design.

In general, Volkswagen has ambitious plans to expand its electric car offering directly to China, in cooperation with local manufacturers. Plans for internal combustion engines are also not abandoned, meaning that VW will also offer a range of plug-in hybrids.
