The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, who is suffering from a fatal disease, has not managed to establish the succession of power according to the family principle, so different factions could start a fight for the position of the head of Chechnya.

In the event of Kadyrov’s death, a violent struggle over who will lead the region could begin in the republic. It could turn into an armed confrontation. If such a scenario comes true, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will have to bring his troops into Chechnya, writes The Times.

The Novaya Gazeta Evropa website reports that Kadyrov is seriously ill, has pancreatic cell necrosis and there is no hope of recovery.

“The fact that Kadyrov is sick is officially denied, and first of all, he himself and the people in his closest circle do it. However, there are things that cannot be hidden, namely, pronounced changes in his appearance, behavior and work schedule,” the publication states.

According to the publication’s information, Kadyrov was first diagnosed with “pancreatic cell necrosis” in January 2019.

Then Kadyrov did not even hide that he was forced to go on vacation because he would not be available for a while.

In October of that year, Kadyrov disappeared from the public eye, but on the “Telegram” platform, anonymous channels appeared with claims about the leader’s poor state of health, which was allegedly related to his poisoning.

True, the official representatives of Chechnya denied it.

Due to Kadyrov’s illness, the Kremlin is facing a serious problem – how to prepare for the change of power in the most difficult region of Russia in the most painless way possible, which may happen in the near future.

For a long time, Moscow managed to keep the Chechens in peace only thanks to the bribery of the local elite and brutal repression against all dissenters.

For the maintenance of Kadyrov’s family and his relatives, Russia spent huge sums of money from the state budget.

The Chechen leader has not yet managed to create a family dynasty that could take over power in the region. His eldest son Ahmat has only reached the age of 18 and cannot lead the republic. The commander of the “Ahmat” unit, Major General Apti Alaudinov, is mentioned as the main candidate who could replace Kadyrov.

“Moscow sees him as a person with whom they can do business, but there are other people close to Kadyrov who may feel that they have a strong right to claim the position. For example, Kadyrov’s cousin Adam Delimkhanov has been Chechnya’s representative in the State Duma since 2007 and has his own armed forces,” the material says.

Rival militant groups have previously sworn allegiance to Kadyrov, but have never fully trusted each other. Attempts to appoint a new leader could lead to a split in the Chechen elite and possibly an armed confrontation involving Putin’s army.
