The residents of Pūpolu Street in Sigulda take the 4th of May celebration seriously. The municipality has taken out permission to close the street to traffic, and almost all the neighbors are helping to create the holiday here.
The people of this place started to celebrate the restoration of Latvia’s Independence in the fresh air and together with everyone last year, when they realized that they live next to each other, but in reality they don’t really know each other.
“I personally have been here for a very long time, about 30 plus years. People change here and it’s like we know each other, but so to you, it wasn’t. On the other hand, this meeting on the street broke down all barriers,” said Ginta Virziņa, a resident of Pūpolu Street, to TV3 news.
Getting to know each other better is only one of the benefits of such a celebration of the Independence Day, the locals admit. Being together also promotes local patriotism, strengthening the local community and is a good way to show children that Latvia’s national holiday should be celebrated.
The patriotism and desire of the residents of Pūpolu Street to celebrate May 4th with grandeur is now gradually starting to inspire those who had not taken such a step so far to celebrate the national holiday in a similar way in their home.
