Latvia’s security will be our priority, and we must learn to live in new conditions, President Edgars Rinkēvičs said in the TV24 program “Dienas personība”.
He emphasized that many issues related to national security are being resolved – for example, if you compare the beginning of the year, the creation and strengthening of the military infrastructure of the country’s eastern border has begun. According to the president, works related to the construction of the border fence are progressing.
Rinkevičs said that they are both essential elements – one against any kind of military provocations, the other – to stand against such hybrid attacks as migration. The President emphasized that the state security institutions are doing a good job detaining people accused of espionage, sabotage organization.
“What do we have to expect?! We have to take into account that security is a process. They will constantly try to test us, there will be provocations. I know that the security authorities are also seriously analyzing all the information, with what comes out from time to time about some plans in the territory of Europe and NATO organize diversions, sabotages, provocations, and react accordingly,” said the President.
He emphasized that the national security system, be it the police, national security institutions or the Ministries of Defense and Interior, cannot be effective without the support and assistance of the entire society. The President called on residents to report something suspicious to the State Police, the State Security Service, the municipal police, and also write on social media.
“In this way, we will also be able to improve common security, prevent provocations. We see that hybrid attacks have somehow become the new norm of the day, while we have such an aggressive neighbor as Russia and its partner – Belarus,” Rinkevičs said.
