Every year there is an increasing growth in schools’ understanding of what they can do for biodiversity. School ideas are becoming more and more interesting and diverse, thus the selection is more and more complicated. We thank all the schools for the submitted applications and invite them to submit their ideas next year as well,” he emphasizes Katrīna Madara Stadgale, head of the WWF climate program.

The ideas of the projects to be implemented range from the creation of a floating island to the establishment of amphibian wintering places. Natural meadow strips will be created on the school grounds, beds where medicinal plants and herbs characteristic of Latvia will be grown, insect houses will be created, as well as a green wall in the science room. As part of the support program “Introduce nature to school”, which has been implemented for the second year with the support of the company “Lidl Latvija”, seven projects applied by schools will receive this year, and they are planned to be implemented by the fall of this year.

“The promotion of biological diversity and its awareness in society is a special focus of Lidl, because we are aware of its importance not only in the context of the planet, but also in ensuring the availability of quality products. We We are happy to be supporters of the WWF project “Introduce nature to school” for the second year and we look forward to the results of the projects in schools. Such activities are important for children, educators, parents and local communities to be more actively involved in caring for the preservation and restoration of natural values,” says Antra Birzule, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Lidl Latvija.

Project of Tukumas Raina State Gymnasium: plans to introduce a vertical garden – a green wall in the school science room. The main goal is to complement the school environment with a functional plant growing system. It will be an opportunity for students to grow and observe the development of plants indoors. At the same time, the green wall will improve indoor air quality and increase emotional well-being. The planned vertical garden will be a clear example of a micro-garden ecosystem model, in which houseplants, tea plants, and herbs will be grown with the help of hydroponics technology, without soil.
