On Thursday, May 9, as part of Europe Day, the Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere Liepāja Raina Middle School and the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Justice Lauma Paegļkalna visited Riga State 3rd Gymnasium with a lecture “Latvia’s 20 years in the European Union” to discuss with young people the benefits related to with membership in the European Union (EU).

Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere discussed the goals and values of the EU with the young people of Liepāja’s Raina Secondary School, mentioning that the EU is a cooperation project of 27 countries with the aim of strengthening the rule of law, democracy, security, prosperity and the regional economy. The benefits of Latvia’s membership in the EU were also discussed, which include not only a financial contribution, but also such important and self-evident freedoms as free flow of products in the EU, free flow of people in the EU, free flow of services in the EU and free flow of capital within the borders of the EU.

Justice Minister Inese Lībiņa-Egnere emphasized that the benefits of EU membership are visible and felt in the streets of Liepāja as well. Without European funding, many important city infrastructure projects would not be possible: deepening of the port, rebuilding of Krūmu Street, Lielas Street and the Tramway Bridge, Grīzupes Street, Kapsedes Street, Vētru Street and Vecās Ostmala section, as well as the existing tram track works are covered in the amount of 85% of EU funds, but 7 million euros from EU funds were also recently allocated for the modernization of Liepāja port.

Also, in her lecture, the minister told the students about the EU’s involvement in the protection of Latvia’s rights. The EU ensures the protection of the fundamental rights of Latvian citizens, fundamental rights being a part of Latvian and EU law since December 1, 2009, when the Treaty of Lisbon entered into force.

On the other hand, the parliamentary secretary Lauma Paegļkalnas in her lecture to the students of Riga State 3rd Gymnasium emphasized Riga’s benefits from the EU, for example the regular construction works financed by EU structural funds (Salu bridge reconstruction, Grīziņkalns block infrastructure projects, reconstruction works of many streets), as well as the regular EU funding of the Occupation of Latvia for the museum, which reduces the financial burden of its maintenance.
