Marking of Azerbaijan and the 30th anniversary of Latvian diplomatic relations, from May 16 to September 15 of this year, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design (DMDM) will host a unique collection exhibition “Genetic code of memory. Carpets of Azerbaijan” in cooperation with the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Latvia and the public joint-stock company “Azerkhalcha”. .
Carpets made by the “Azerkhalcha” company, whose workshops are staffed by artisans of different generations, will be on display at the exhibition. Azerbaijani carpets are known all over the world for their original ornamentation, composition and color solution. Threads, knots, patterns – the Azerbaijani carpet is not just an aesthetically pleasing interior item, but the life of an entire nation, woven over thousands of years, according to the exhibition’s creators.
At the same time, the exposition will give an idea of the similarities between the ornaments of Latvia and Azerbaijan, reflecting various aspects of the interaction of the peoples, historical connections or common themes that have influenced the culture of both countries. Paying tribute to the old master of Latvian applied art, Jūlija Straumi, on the 150th anniversary, the exhibition integrates the artist’s works, which have not been seen by the public yet, made on the territory of Azerbaijan – unique carpet patterns, which he recorded and colored in photographs during his expeditions.
