It’s no secret that often the first opinion about a book depends on the design of the book cover. On the other hand, when you take the book in your hands and flip through it – from the design of the inside pages. We can judge the content of the book only when we have read it, but the opinion about the cover is formed instantly – like it or not. Therefore, it is very important that both the interior page layout and the book cover design are done professionally and in doing so, all the important factors of proper layout design are taken into account.
Seven questions to answer before designing book covers and book covers
When the author submits a book order to the “Sava book” publishing house, we will try to find answers to the following questions:
Question 1: What is the content of the book and what audience is it intended for?
Our artists will definitely know what a thriller book cover should look like and what a poetry book should look like. What will work in the design of a fantasy or horror book will definitely not work in a memoir or memoir, and vice versa. Therefore, the layout of the inside pages of the books and the creation of the cover must be adapted to each book individually.
Question 2: What will be the format of the book?
Before starting work, we will definitely agree with the author on the format of the book. How to design the book is of great importance – how it will look and what size is suitable for the particular book.
Question 3: What font will we use in the book?
Book layout and cover creation is unthinkable without a font chosen by the artist. Today, the choice of fonts is huge (several thousands of them). We’ll know what font to suggest and which one will look best for your book. The choice of font is important not only for the inside pages, but also for the cover design. Today, the main component of high-quality cover designs is precisely the choice of font in the book title and the author’s cover representation.
Question 4: How will we embed the font in the text of the book?
Once the right font has been found, the next step is to incorporate it correctly into the text of the book. There is no single standard by which books are created. For each book, font installation must be done individually. The correct font size, line spacing, line alignment, margins, etc. must be determined. At this moment, we look and think whether to supplement the text with some graphic and visual elements (for example, large letters at the beginning of chapters or small ornaments for page numbering).
Question 5: Will there be photographs or images in the book?
If photographs or images are used in the book, their location and appearance is determined during layout. Our artists will offer the best solutions, taking into account both the quality of the images and their importance. There are images that are made larger to highlight their quality or content. There are images that are used only for explanations or to supplement the text, and their size is not important. All these things are determined and incorporated into the layout in cooperation with the author or the customer.
Question 6: What will be the book cover design?
When creating a cover design, we can offer all the possibilities of modern technologies available in modern book cover printing. There are different materials to use in binding a cover; gravure or congreve is possible to create a relief for the cover design. We can offer 3D UV varnish, which is applied to individual elements of the cover design. We have at our disposal an almost unlimited selection of colored foils that can be pressed onto the lid using the hot press method.
For some books, the edge printing of the inner page block will be very suitable. Such books will stand out from the rest both in bookstores and on readers’ bookshelves. As already mentioned above, our possibilities in the design of covers and their post-processing are one of the widest and almost limitless. In addition, it applies to both large editions and books that need to be printed only in tens or a few hundreds.
Question 7: Will the book also be published in electronic format?
If the author wants to publish his book also in the format of an electronic book (e-book), it is very important to take this into account from the very beginning, before preparing the book for printing. There are many technical nuances that must be taken into account in order for the e-book to work to its full potential.
