On Friday, May 10, the World Hockey Championship (WHC) begins, which this year will be held in the Czech cities of Prague and Ostrava. This year, at the World Hockey Championship (WHC), teams from Canada, Finland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Great Britain will meet in subgroup A games, while in subgroup B games, which also includes the Latvian national team, the USA, Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, National teams of France, Kazakhstan and Poland.

Edgars Masaļskis, the most played goalkeeper in the history of the Latvian hockey team, who has played as a goalkeeper in 15 world championships and four Winter Olympic Games tournaments, says that this year will definitely be more difficult for the Latvian hockey team. “The opponents will evaluate the Latvian national team more seriously this year, because everyone will want to play very well against Latvia – against the team that won a medal the previous year, but the advantage of the Latvian hockey national team is, of course, huge experience from last year – it will definitely help. This year, the focus should be on ensuring that the team has a consistently good and stable performance for 60 minutes – so that it does not happen that, for example, they sleep at the beginning of the game and then try to fight back. On the other hand, we – on the other side of the pitch – must definitely wait, hope and believe that the Latvian national team can repeat the same high performance as the previous year. Of course, there are possible drops, but the main thing is to support the Latvian national team in any results.”

During the championship, Latvian Television (LTV) will provide viewers with discussions in the LTV7 Hockey studio. This year’s team consists of LTV sports journalist Reinis Ošieneks and hockey experts Artis Ābols and Edgars Masalskis.

LTV7 will broadcast the Hockey Studio before every game of the Latvian hockey team and championship finals. LTV sports journalist Reinis Ošinek states that this will be his debut in the PČH studio. “Before that, together with Edgars Masalski and Oleg Sorokin, I managed the hockey studio of the Olympic Games, but that was in February. We all know well that May is the real time for hockey. About experts – it is a great honor to be in the company of such men. Former players of the Latvian national team – Edgars has always been responsible for the safety of the goal, Artis – for the attack. Then I will be like a defender between them in such a composition – I will try to block pucks and help Edgar, at the same time I will try to give a long pass to the forward Artis.”

All 64 championship games will be available on the public media portal LSM (in the section “Hockey Championship 2024”) – in the same section you will find interviews, behind-the-scenes, video archive, game calendar, tournament tables, reviews and other original content, informs Latvian Television.

Every evening shortly before midnight, at 11:50 p.m., LTV7 will show a review of the entire day’s matches – it will summarize the most interesting moments, goals scored and other engaging episodes. LTV journalists – Andris Auziņš, Matīss Timofejevs and Emīls Caune – will invite various guests to the studio, discussing the day’s events. On the other hand, viewers will be able to get involved and ask questions to the guests of the program on the social media site “X” using LielaisHokejs . In addition, you will also be able to find out the latest statistical indicators – skating speed, puck flight speed in the strongest shots, etc

The broadcast rights of Latvian Television are provided by an agreement with the exclusive media and marketing partner of the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship “Infront Sports & Media AG”. The agreement provides for broadcasting rights from 2024 to 2028.
