Today, May 7, in the policy debate of the Council of Ministers of Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Rights Protection of the European Union, a commitment was made to continuous cooperation between the Member States and the European Commission in order to achieve a more effective prevention of discrimination by joint efforts, in an effort to achieve a comprehensive EU regulation against any form of discrimination .

It would be useful to collect examples of best practices that promote equality at European level. Member states must move towards ensuring full accessibility both in accordance with the proposal for the Council Directive on the implementation of the principle of equal treatment regardless of religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation, and in accordance with the rights of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This would provide an opportunity for persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all areas of life.

Taking part in the policy discussion, the parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Agnese Lāce, emphasized that combating and preventing gender-related violence and domestic violence is one of Latvia’s priorities. Latvia has recently ratified the Istanbul Convention, and the first intersectoral Plan for preventing and combating domestic violence and violence against women is currently being developed.

Latvia was represented in the discussions by Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Culture Agnese Lāce and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Latvia to the European Union, Ambassador Mārtiņš Kreitus.
