“There are different things with the Latgalian language. I know many such examples, and I don’t know if they are good examples, when Russians know Latvian, understand Latvian, but demonstratively show that they don’t understand. But they perceive the Latgalian language as an identification of the place and their own. We also have people [latgalieši]who subscribes to the newspaper in Russian, and when I ask him why he doesn’t subscribe in Latvian – no, no – it’s not Latvian”, the editor of “Ludzas zemes” Laima Linuža explains the complicated reality in the TV24 program “Press Club”.

Laima Linuža expresses her concern that the fact that the autonomy of Latgale is talked about a lot and often is not adequately appreciated. This issue has escalated on all social networks. All you have to do is write an article about the problems when social media comments are full of calls for autonomy and claims that Riga is destroying us, says Linuža.

“Currently, I know people who walk around Ludza and complain about the autonomy of Latgale. If I know these names, are they really not known to the responsible services? I have mentioned these surnames to your people in e-mails, text messages. Where are the results? Laima Linuža is critical.
