The event is organized by the National Cinema Center RE MEDIA office to celebrate Europe Day and celebrate European cinema. There are several reasons for the celebration this year – both 20 years since Latvia was admitted to the European Union and NATO, and 10 years since the foundation has been operating Creative Europe / Creative Europe. For the Talsi screening in the cinema Auricle there is another symbolic reason – it has been ten years since Laila Pakalniņa’s film was shot in Talso Dawn; almost 900 participants from the towns and villages of Kurzeme participated in its creation, including many residents of Talsi and its surroundings. At the screening, everyone involved will have the opportunity to meet each other again and also with the film’s director Laila Pakalnin and the creative group.

In Riga, in the cinema Kino Bize films Time bridges in the screening (2018, directed by Kristīne Briede and Audris Stonis) you will have the opportunity to enjoy Baltic poetic documentary cinema, which reveals the human soul in a nuanced and subtle way – the documentary film, which was shot in the Latvian film Centennial program, tells the story of the 20th century. For the young documentarians of the 1960s, who in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia found a way to talk about their era in the conditions of Soviet censorship, while searching for answers to eternal questions. Their language was poetic, cinema saturated with symbols and metaphors, which continues to inspire the Baltic people to this day, develops visual culture, the ability to think, see, perceive.

Cinema K. Sun will focus on current political processes by showing two films that thematically touch on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Films directed by Jura Pakalninis Master plan the topic is acutely relevant, even though eight years have already passed since the film’s premiere, it explores the destructive influence of the Russian propaganda machine. A film by Ukrainian director Roman Bondarchuk Ukrainian sheriffswhich was made in cooperation with the Latvian studio VFS Films, confirms the selflessness of Ukrainian men both then and now. The program will end on a brighter note – with a feature film by director Jānis Ābele Jelgava ’94looking into the life of 12-year-olds ten years before Latvia joined the European Union.
