Bauskas is holding a donor day on May 14

Next week, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you will be able to donate blood in the hall on the third floor of the Bauska hospital polyclinic. Currently, donors of all blood groups are expected, but especially donors of blood groups 0+, 0– and A–, “Bauskas Dzīve” learned from the State Blood Donor Center (VADC).

When donating blood, an identity document is required – passport or eID card; as well as the bank account number to receive the reward.

VADC states that in order to ensure a sufficient supply of blood, donor blood is needed on a regular basis. Donor blood saves lives every day both during operations and improves the health condition and quality of life of various patients. Nowadays, whole blood is not used for the treatment of patients, but each blood dose is divided into three components – erythrocytes, plasma and platelets, and the patient receives exactly the blood component that he needs. Thus, one blood dose donated by one donor can help up to three fellow human beings.

VADC reminds you of the criteria to consider to become a blood donor. Before blood is donated, it is necessary to find out whether the blood donor meets various conditions, for example, whether he is in the age group of 18 to 65 years, weighs not less than 50 kg. It is important that the day before donating blood, the donor has not consumed alcohol, nor has he been sick recently and feels healthy. It is also important for the donor to eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of fluids, and sleep well before donating blood.

According to the Labor Law, the donor is entitled to a paid rest day the day after donating blood, but it can be granted at a different time after agreement with the employer (it is also possible to add it to annual leave). This rest day can be used within a year after the blood donation day. The employer pays for up to five such days per calendar year, unless the parties have agreed otherwise or, for example, stipulated a higher number of paid rest days in the collective labor agreement.
