Taking care to ensure that Daugavpils is as comfortable and safe as possible for people with mobility problems, as well as parents with prams, the city municipality is constantly working on improving the accessibility of the environment: within the framework of various projects, the accessibility of public buildings is improved and the sidewalk infrastructure is organized, the municipality provides material support also for appropriate adaptation of housing.
During the last year, measures to improve environmental accessibility have been carried out in several municipal buildings. Daugavpils Social Services Assistant Services Sector and Home Care Office started work in well-equipped premises at Alejas street 68. The accessibility of the environment has also been improved in the premises of the Social Services Organization and Social Work for Families with Children sector at Kr.Valdemāra Street 13. The social service is active in helping to improve the living conditions of Daugavpils who move around in wheelchairs on a daily basis: in this year’s municipal budget, 117,800 euros are earmarked for the installation of lifts, ramps and other home adaptation measures.
Controlling the quality of work execution and how functional the improvements made in practice are, the facilities are inspected not only by specialists in the construction industry, but also by the deputy of the municipality, paralympian Dmitrijs Valainis.
“It must be said that the situation in Daugavpils is generally much better than in many other cities. But there is still enough work. Together with the Municipal Administration, we determine the places where the exits from the sidewalks need to be improved. In anticipation of the summer, we gathered information about the accessibility of tourist facilities for people with mobility problems. We are also planning meetings with representatives of public organizations to determine work priorities for the near future. It should be understood that for those who move in a wheelchair, any little thing can become an insurmountable obstacle. At the same time, sometimes very little effort is needed to solve the problem.”
Work on environmental accessibility in Daugavpils streets and institutions continues. In the meantime, residents of our city who need support in installing ramps or lifts, as well as in adapting their home to be able to move around in a wheelchair, are invited to contact the Social Service, where they will receive all the necessary information about the environmental accessibility improvement program implemented by the municipality.
