Aija does not hide that she follows with interest the series of doctor’s stories on the LA.LV portal, which is why she herself decided to share her experience. In continuation, Aija’s story.

“I am from Riga, but a few years ago, when my husband died, my son and I temporarily moved to an inherited museum house outside of Riga. It was both cheaper and more convenient, because this house, like a museum, was visited by excursionists, so it always had to be kept clean and warm, with snow removed or the lawn mowed. It was difficult for us as people from Riga, besides, life in the countryside turned out to be very expensive, because there was only electric heating, in a word, the dream of the idyll of rural life collapsed, because I realized that I would have to sell the house and change my life again. I felt very depressed, insomnia started. Daci, a psychiatrist at the “Veldre” outpatient center, was recommended to me as a good specialist.

I, like almost everyone, had a stigma against seeing a psychiatrist and the fear of “getting on the record,” so my first two questions to her were about “getting on the record” and whether the medication she prescribed would allow me to drive. The psychiatrist answered me – I quote literally: “You will not be on the list until I put you there” and: “You can drive, just drive carefully.”
After prescribing four different medicines, the doctor suggested to come back in two weeks and tell me how I feel. She was very friendly, smiling and kind, talked a lot about God. I visited her regularly for a while because she said to come once a month.

Considering that I was absolutely sure that I was “not on the list”, I decided to pass the driver’s medical examination at Health Center 4. I was extremely surprised when it turned out that I was “on the list”. It is understandable that I was very angry – I drove straight to Veldre Street and asked the psychiatrist what it meant. She, without batting an eye, said that there was no problem – that I should go to Tvaika Street and pass the driver’s commission. I left her office without saying goodbye. Understandably, that was my last visit to her.

A year ago, after moving to Tallinn, I requested copies of all my medical documents. When I started reading psychiatrist Dace Amoliņa’s notes in my outpatient patient chart, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

The first entry about me is as follows: “Sick for the first time, lives in the countryside in my mother’s house. The mother has epilepsy, very despotic. Periodically pronounced nightmarish suspiciousness, hysterical attacks on relatives with suspicion.” (I would like to note that my mother, who had been dead for 10 years at that time, was never a patient of psychiatrist Dace Amoliņa and was never diagnosed with epilepsy, besides – as I know now – all four drugs prescribed by this doctor at that time are incompatible with driving). After that, psychiatrist Dace Amoliņa recommended me to the “K” observation group, and I was entered in the register (so “put on the record”).

The next entry two weeks later is even more interesting: “The patient is better. She admits that she has been worried for a long time about breaking into the apartment, that someone will take the house away. Now we can discuss this issue. The nightmares continue.” (I will note that we are talking about an open-plan house – that is, without apartments – and that I told her not, of course, about “breaking into the apartment” and “taking away the house”, but about my domestic problems and plans to sell the house.)

I would not recommend this psychiatrist to my worst enemy.

I will note that for some reason this doctor clearly did not like the fact that “the patient always has to feed her adult son” and “the patient allows her spoiled son, who is supposedly studying, to drive with a ‘white license'”, at the same time emphasizing again and again , that I am “self-centered” – I really don’t understand what all this has to do with my mental health. I am also “untidy”, “I don’t control my weight”, having “broken my leg”, so I can “walk only with a crutch” (I have never broken my leg and walked with a crutch) and that I have sexual dysfunction. She does not mention that I am a member of the Writers’ Union, which has translated more than 40 books from English.”

This is Aija’s story. Once again, a typical story about how it is not about the medical system or funding, the question is only about how we treat each other and what principles we adhere to in our work.

If you also have a story about your experience in the field of medicine, I would be very happy if you would share it by e-mail [email protected]!
