Jānis’ eldest daughter, Iveta, says that this has now become a family matter: “On holidays, we all go to help. Dad has three daughters, each of them has a significant other and children – we are a big company that tries to come to help during the flowering period, not only on holidays.”

Iveta is happy how the advertisement about “Daugmale peonies” has spread by word of mouth, sometimes even a line of cars forms on the side of the road, people have called this place the local Holland.

Asked to tell more about how it all started, Iveta says: “Dad started doing this business more than 40 years ago, it has only grown little by little. He started with tulips and gladioli, which he took to trade in other countries. At the moment, the biggest emphasis is on growing peonies, tulips and daffodils, but we also have many other bulbs, albeit in smaller quantities.”

About 300 varieties of tulips and 250 varieties of daffodils are currently blooming on an area of approximately one hectare. Around 600 varieties of peonies will bloom later.

“None of us even knows the exact number of breeds anymore. As laughingstocks, every visitor has the opportunity to go and try to count.”

“Daugmale Peonies” can be visited every day, except Mondays, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitors are warmly welcomed on May 6 as well, because this is when the flowering is in full swing.

Iveta says that visitors often travel in large buses: “Well, we are already known throughout the Baltics, visitors come from the nearby Nordic countries, also from China. In the past, we delivered flowers to merchants at the same time, but now we are no longer able to, because most of them are bought freshly cut – at our farm.”

All this is more of a hobby, but now it is possible to earn a little, but the work must be invested in it all, because most of the work is done by hand, the tractor only helps in cultivating the land. However, everything is worth it, because seeing the vast blooming fields is a great satisfaction for the whole family.

More information about the farm can be found on the website and Facebook profile.
