Last night in Riga, in the suburbs of Vidzeme, several people were rescued from a fire in a nine-story building, LETA agency learned from the State Fire and Rescue Service.

At 3:09 VUGD received a call to Maliena Street, where smoke could be felt in a nine-story residential building. At the scene, it was found that three square meters of household goods were on fire in the stairwell of the first floor. Four people were rescued from one apartment with a car ladder, while another eight people evacuated on their own. Two people were transferred to the Emergency Medical Service.

A fire in a multi-storey residential building also broke out in the suburbs of Latgale on Firsa Sadovnikova Street on Saturday evening. There, shortly after 9 p.m., food caught fire in an apartment on the second floor of a seven-story building, causing smoke. The fire was extinguished before the arrival of VUGD, however, 30 people managed to evacuate the building.

In the past 24 hours, from Saturday at 6:30 a.m. to Sunday at 6:30 a.m., VUGD received a total of 63 calls – 28 for firefighting, including six for bushfires and two for forest fires, 23 for rescue work, but 12 calls turned out to be misleading.
