Following the end of the ban on fishing from boats, canals and culverts, the State Environmental Service (VVD) conducted several surveillance raids on the entire territory of Latvia on May 1, checking a total of 392 fishermen.

In Vidzeme, two industrial fishing operators have been consulted, three administrative offense proceedings have been initiated for fishing without a license, as well as fishing from a bridge. In the Kurzeme and Zemgale region, fishermen who were unable to present an identity document were found, and a warning was issued for the violation. On the other hand, in Latgale, three administrative violation proceedings have been initiated for the absence of a fishing card and keeping “undersized” pike in the net. However, in general, violations that would have a significant impact on fish resources have not been detected, VVD reports.

On this day, the service responded to residents’ complaints about detected fishing violations, as a result of which six fishing nets were removed from Vēze Lake in Talsi district, one fishing line from Dabaru lake in Cēsi district, two nets in the Venta River (one of the tributaries of Vecventa) and one lamprey in the Grivas River.

The VVD reminds that certain restrictions on fishing continue in May – until May 15 it is forbidden to keep salamanders in the net, and until May 31 – zanders. On the other hand, until May 31, fishing with fish traps is prohibited throughout Latvia, but until June 15, it is prohibited to catch any fish in all water bodies with fish nets.

As of May 1, fishing is prohibited in certain rivers and parts of lakes, including the Daugava from its mouth into the Gulf of Riga in a 6-kilometer section upstream to the former high-voltage transmission line in the territory of the city of Riga, the entire length of the Loči channel, the entire length of the Sarkandaugava until May 31.

Likewise, until May 31, the established fishing ban continues in certain places in the Lielupe river and in the Lielupe basin area: in Lielupe from the Staļžene bridge upstream to the confluence of Mūsa and Mēmele below the Bauska castle ruins; In Mēmele from the mouth to the pedestrian bridge in Bauska; In ours from the mouth to the bridge at the motor sports complex; In Slocene (Pulkaine) between Lake Valgum and Lake Kaniera; In Vecslocene and Slocene between Lake Slokas and Lielupi.
