Daugavpils Rothko Museum’s wide range of offers has just been supplemented by a new museum-pedagogical lesson – “City of Dreams. Peter’s story”. Its core consists of an interactive workshop with elements of modern technology for learning about contemporary ceramics and improving the skills of creating spatial objects for school-age children and young people.

Thematically, the lesson focuses on the personality and creative heritage of the outstanding Latvian architect and ceramist Pēteras Martinsons.

Along with Mark Rothko’s original works, among the greatest values ​​of the Rothko Museum’s collection has been the collection of Peter Martinson’s ceramics for eleven years. It can be found in Martinson’s house – the exhibition sector, which is located in one of the renovated historical buildings of the Daugavpils fortress, right there in the courtyard of the museum.

By connecting the key points of Pēter Martinson’s biography with developments in Latvian history and the Rothko Museum’s rich collection of contemporary ceramics, the interactive lesson “City of Dreams. Peter’s story”, where the main value is a person and the power of his creative spirit. The lesson is based on an original interactive game in which, through history, art, technology and various tasks, you get to know the creative path of the world-renowned artist Pēteras Martinsons, born in Daugavpils, and his contribution to the development of Latvian contemporary ceramics. At the same time, it is an excellent opportunity to gain or supplement the idea of ​​the properties of ceramic material, glazing techniques and firing methods.

The experience of the participants of the class is enriched by the augmented reality app “Martinsons AR” developed by the computer designer Māra Popova. By downloading it to their smart device and scanning the code offered by the museum educator, students can digitally experience eight ceramic works by Peter Martinsson. Digitized samples of contemporary ceramics can be viewed in 360 degrees and are easily zoomed in, which allows you to appreciate their surface properties, fineness of plastic details, color and other nuances.

Context: The world-famous artist, the founder of abstract expressionism, Mark Rothko’s museum in Daugavpils (formerly the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center) has just crossed the threshold of its eleventh anniversary. Created as one of the most ambitious Latvian cultural projects of the 21st century, it is an attractive destination for art lovers of all ages, including children and young people, who want to experience world-class art, expand their horizons, acquire new knowledge and develop creative skills.

The creation of the lesson was supported by the State Cultural Capital Fund in the 2023 target program “Latvian school bags” for content creation.
