Theater in Trakonam. A review of the week’s stage events

“Marath/Sad”

Those who have studied in the theater module of the Master’s degree of the Faculty of Humanities have heard a lot about Pēter Weiss’s play, but the rest of the audience probably does not know that it is very voluminous. Directors Klāvs Mellis and Rūdolfs Gediņš, in collaboration with composer Edgars Mākens, have focused the play on one and a half hours without an intermission and called it an opera for the faint of heart.

The metaphor “the world is a theater”, as well as the metaphor “the world is crazy” is quite widely used in the history of world theater, only in this case they are both combined – in the play “Marat/Sade” the world is a crazy theater, in which the Marquis de Sade stages extravagant plays and himself tackles important questions about revolution and justice in any era. In the performance of the National Theater, intellectual discussions alternate with musical numbers performed by insane patients. It’s a colorful, loud and messy world. Learning from last week’s mistake, when many listeners heard that not everyone needs to see it, this time I will say it differently – there are viewers who really like this show. But opinions are very divided.

“Time for Paradise”

Another previously unfairly mentioned National Theater show is being shown in the New Hall, and it is Margaret Perry’s tragicomedy “Time for Paradise” directed by the young director Endīnes Bērzina. This is the story of an essential oil distribution pyramid involving only women. Each of these ladies has their own fate and reasons for joining this project. The evening you spend in this company will be bittersweet, like the smell of essential oil. The show managed to fool me – I sensed that there would be some dramatic twist at the end, but it wasn’t quite what I expected.

What else to experience?

Among the latest news that has not yet had its premiere, we should mention the Puppet Theater’s last new production of this season “The Adventures of Little Cinderella”, which can be seen on the national holiday – May 4, it is a show using the shadow theater technique. The play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” has returned to the Valmiera Theater after a certain break, while the Daile Theater is saying goodbye to the production “Caucasian Chalk Circle” on Tuesday. On May 8, twice in “Horse Mail” you will be able to watch Olga Žitluhina’s latest work with the 7th generation students of Latvian Academy of Contemporary Dance, soon to be choreographers – “Trīsošā Migla”. Although this performance is still ahead of us all, I can predict that Olga Zhitluhin’s dance performances are always an intriguing experience.
