The hospital ended last year with a loss of 312,865 euros. Compared to the previous year, due to the increase in the number of patients, the expenses were reduced by approximately 5%, but the net turnover, which is based on the financing of the National Health Service (NHS), decreased by 12.3%, according to the hospital.

According to the annual report of the hospital’s management, the hospital has no liquidity risk and economic activity is ensured in accordance with its goals – to provide affordable health care services to the residents of the Zemgale region.

Last year, the hospital provided full-scale emergency and scheduled outpatient and inpatient medical assistance to residents. In total, 10,745 patients were treated in the hospital in the reporting year, which is 33 patients or 0.3% more than in 2022.

In 2023, the average duration of inpatient treatment per patient was 5.87 days, which has increased by 5% compared to 2022. On the other hand, the occupancy of public beds in 2023 was 67.22%, which is 4.4% more than in 2022.

The most important challenge in 2024 will be attracting medical personnel to the hospital. In the assessment of the institution’s management, the Latvian labor market is in a catastrophic situation and there is a lack of certified doctors in health care. The hospital management believes that the main reasons for the lack of health care personnel in Latvia are restrictions on the services provided by certain specialties of doctors and nurses, opportunities to earn more with less responsibility in secondary outpatient health care, as well as an increased level of migration among health care specialists, especially refers to the younger generation.

The average number of employees of the hospital in 2023 was 609 employees, which, compared to 2022, is 14 employees or 2.3% more. Out of the total number of employees, 128 are doctors, 26 are residents, 186 are middle medical personnel, 75 are junior medical personnel and 194 are other employees. The increase in the number of staff is related to summer employment for children, an increase in long-term absentee staff and increased availability of on-call staff, which does not increase the number of hours actually worked and costs.

The management of the hospital states that the rapid increase in the price of energy resources and raw materials, which directly affects the economic activity of the society, has a negative impact on the future development of the hospital. The increase in prices also complicates the planning and implementation of investment projects.

This year, it is planned to conclude a contract with the Central Finance and Contracts Agency (CFLA) for the implementation of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) project for the reconstruction of the Emergency Aid and Reception Department. The hospital’s management indicates that the implementation of the project will help to organize the flow of patients in the hospital’s Emergency and Reception Department, which will allow to increase the efficiency of the provision of health care services, ensuring the optimization of the use of human resources, and reduce the workload of the staff in the hospital’s departments.

“Jelgava City Hospital” is one of the seven regional multi-profile medical institutions in Latvia.
