A family from Latvia is also in the clip of the European Parliament election campaign / Article

Weinberg watched the informative clip with his granddaughter Linda in the garden of his house in Valka. The clip was made this winter in Copenhagen, in which seniors – grandmothers and grandfathers – revealed to their grandchildren what they experienced, including the Second World War and arrests. Weinberg told his granddaughter, who was not yet born, about the Baltic Way.

“The Baltic road was near Rūjiena the night before, we left. The roads were full. We held hands, the mood was high,” said Weinberg.

His granddaughter expressed: “We are already born in a free country. We may not even appreciate how people have fought. It was so emotional to see from different cultures… everyone comes together and can talk from the heart. And to see different points of view, but their one common value – freedom.”

Weinberg was a rescue diver and a refrigerator manager, played in the Estonian-Latvian big band. Since joining the EU, he especially appreciates the opportunity to travel, because he used to have a spy with him on every trip, who reported to the State Security Committee.

Weinberg said: “When I went to Bulgaria for the first time, I looked – that such a person does not stay anywhere.”

On the other hand, his granddaughter Linda expressed: “We can go to the streets, express our thoughts. We can gather.”
The demolished borders are used by the residents of Valka, the border town of Latvia and Estonia, every day when they walk to Estonia, said Weinberg.

Weinberg and his granddaughter Linda run in every election. The choice is made by reading the programs and watching the debates.

“There are lists, there are descriptions, I watch on television what everyone has done, what everyone is fighting for. That’s how I make my choice,” said Weinberg.
However, his granddaughter said: “If people don’t go to vote, then they shouldn’t complain that they don’t like something. And secondly, we can all together elect those who can help Latvia grow.”

On Monday, April 29, the information campaign with the call not to vote for someone else in the European Parliament elections starts in all EU member states.

Marta Rībele, head of the European Parliament’s office in Latvia, said: “I cried the most at the moment when Aldis from Latvia starts speaking, because I am extremely pleased that in this campaign, where there are only representatives of 10 countries, there is a person from Latvia, Aldis and Linda. But I also remember the story of my family, how we stood on the Baltic road. My mother was an independence fighter.”

Riebele reminded that the European Parliament is the only EU institution that can be elected by the citizens themselves, so voting is important regardless of the member state.

“It is the only directly elected institution of the European Union, we have been in this union for 20 years and 80% of our laws are based on the decisions of the European Union, and the only way to influence it is to go to these elections on June 8. But above all these things, whether we have one or another green course is a question – whether we will have democracy. And it must be protected,” noted Riebele.
This year, the European Parliament elections are held in Latvia on June 8. 9 deputies will be elected from Latvia. 271 candidates from the lists of 16 parties or party associations are running for these nine seats.

CONTEXT:
