The Council of Public Electronic Media (SEPLP) will hold a competition for the election of a new public media ombudsman. The current ombudsman, Anda Rožukalne, has informed SEPLP that she will continue to perform her duties until July 7, as she has decided to use the opportunity to work on an important research project outside of Latvia.

“The Council expresses its gratitude to Anda Rožukalne for the important work she has done. Her election as the first public media ombudsman at the end of 2021 has been one of the most important decisions made by the Council so far. As an internationally recognized media expert, Anda has laid solid foundations for the self-regulation system of public media and set a high bar for the requirements for the continuation of her work. Her opinions have been very important, both in explaining the role and tasks of public media to the public, and in forcing the media to take a critical look at themselves and maintain the highest content quality standards,” emphasizes Jānis Siksnis, chairman of SEPLP.

In accordance with the Law on Public Electronic Media and Their Management, an open competition will be announced for the vacancy of public media ombudsman in the near future. A person with an impeccable reputation, higher education and at least five years of professional experience in the field of mass media or at least five years of academic work experience in a relevant sector can be elected as the public media ombudsman. SEPLP elects the public media ombudsman for a five-year term, with candidacies previously coordinated with the ethical councils of public electronic media.
