Nat the weekend at the age of 60 passed away Member of the Council of the Bank of Latvia and former Minister of Finance Andris Vilks.

“This week has started with sad news – Andris Vilks, a colleague on the board of the Bank of Latvia, passed away over the weekend. Andris was endowed with a sharp mind and did not shy away from difficulties. Condolences to the family and current and former colleagues of Andras,” writes the president of the Bank of Latvia, Mārtiņš Kazāks, on the website X.

On October 1, 2020, the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia elected Andri Vilka as a member of the Board of the Bank of Latvia for a five-year term, which began on November 16, 2020, according to information on the Bank of Latvia website.

Andris Vilks was born on June 15, 1963.

He received his secondary education at Valkas 1st secondary school, but in 1986 he graduated from the Faculty of Geography of the University of Latvia (master’s degree in geography). He has supplemented his knowledge in several investment, financial analysis, management and marketing courses.

2010-2014 In 2010, he was the Minister of Finance (elected to the 10th and 11th Saeima), as well as the representative of the Republic of Latvia at the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Northern Investment Bank and the Bank of the Council of Europe. In 2008 and 2009, Andris Vilks was Prime Minister Ivars Godmani’s, and in 2009 and 2010, Prime Minister Valdas Dombrovskis’ freelance adviser on economic and financial issues, as well as the economic adviser of the Association of Large Cities of Latvia.

1995-2010 Andris Vilks worked at the current AS “SEB banka” (in 2010 – advisor to the president on economic issues, in 2007-2009 – chief economist, in 2002-2007 – head of the Market and Industry Analysis Department, before that – Sector and Country analyst of the analysis department, head of the Securities Market Analysis Department, analyst of the Strategy and Analysis Department, analyst of the Lending Department). 2005-2010 In 2010, he was also the head of the Economic and Monetary Committee of the Latvian Commercial Banks Association (now the Financial Industry Association). In 2007 and 2008, Andris Vilks was a member of the Macroeconomic Situation Stabilization Group of the Government of the Republic of Latvia.

1987-1994 Andris Vilks worked in state institutions and non-governmental organizations.

In 2013, “The Banker” (“Financial Times Group”) recognized Andris Vilkas as the best finance minister in Europe in 2012. He is a Knight of the Order of the Cross of the Land of Mara of the Republic of Estonia (2012), according to the information available on the website of the Bank of Latvia.
