The library’s Yard celebration was held

With an informative and diverse program for the whole family, a Yard Festival was held on April 28 in the Jelgava City Library.

The celebration was opened by Alda Barševski, the main collection keeper of the Gederts Elias Jelgava Museum of History and Art, telling stories about the twists and turns and secrets of the history of the “Academia Petrina” courtyard. The visitors of the festival also took on the role of the storyteller, who shared their memories of childhood and adventures in the yards. On the other hand, Vilnis Dumpis and Guntis Schweitzers performed with a musical performance, and as a surprise, Simon Westrips from England gave a musical greeting to the visitors of the festival.

Throughout the day, both young and old festival-goers enthusiastically played various large-format games and folded origami. The “Senses corner” attracted a lot of interest, where you had to guess what was hidden in a bag by touch and smell, which, as it turns out, was not so easy at all. There was constant activity at the “Reader gives to a reader” book exchange shelf, where visitors could either pick up and find a useful book for themselves, or leave the books themselves if they are no longer needed.

It should be noted that for the Pagalma festival, the library created the exhibition “Jelgava book publishers” about the 14 most prominent book publishers in Jelgava since the 18th century. The exhibition will be on view in the reading room of the Jelgava City Library. But in order to learn more about the library’s yard and the events it stores, visitors could view the educational exhibition “Following the footsteps of J. Jonev’s novel “Jelgava 94”, which was implemented in 2018 as part of the project by the Jelgava City Library. The exhibition was created to stimulate the interest of the city’s residents and guests in J. Jonev’s famous novel “Jelgava 94” and especially – its connection with the urban environment and the library, in the yard of which a film was once filmed.

During the holidays, the adjacent studio “Mākslu RŪME” also opened its doors to visitors, inviting them to buy things created by local craftsmen and artists.
