During the World Hockey Championship, outdoor cafes will be able to place screens and mobile beverage machines – Riga

As last year’s pilot project on placement of screens and mobile beverage equipment in summer cafes during important events went successfully, this year also, in anticipation of the World Hockey Championship, the placement of these equipment will be allowed.

Placing television screens and mobile beverage machines in summer cafes during big sports and cultural events allows cafe and restaurant owners to attract visitors. Also, it is an opportunity for residents of Riga and guests of the city to gather on the outdoor terraces of Riga’s cafes and restaurants to watch the live broadcasts of sports competitions together. The nearest sporting event – the World Hockey Championship – will take place from May 10 and last until May 26.

At the end of the pilot project, placement of TV screens and beverage machines is allowed not only on summer terraces that are not attached to cafes and restaurants located in permanent buildings, but also in summer cafes located near restaurants and cafes located in buildings. Last year, 14 cafes and restaurants used this opportunity.

In order to place an outdoor cafe, it is necessary to obtain a permit from the municipality for street sales. The permit can be applied for electronically, on the eriga.lv portal, in the Street sales section, or in person, at the customer service departments of the Neighborhood Residents’ Center (AIC) of the city of Riga. When submitting an application, the remarks section must indicate the need to place a beverage machine and/or a TV screen.

If a street trading permit has already been received or an application for a summer cafe permit has already been submitted in order to be able to place a screen and/or a mobile beverage machine, the company must send information to the AIC to the e-mail [email protected], specifying the cafe, its address, and attaching a photo with the intended arrangement of elements.

After obtaining a permit for street sales for the operation of mobile beverage equipment, approval for the retail sale of alcoholic beverages in the premises must be obtained. AKKA/LAA and LAIPA licenses must be obtained to play content on screens.
