April 26, 1986. The day when the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster took place, which remained in people’s memories for life. In an attempt to prevent the consequences of the accident and to cover up what happened, the Soviet officials sent thousands of poorly protected people to the accident site at that time, among them the people of Gulbeni. More than 6,000 Latvian residents were involved in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident in Latvia. Radiation greatly affected the health of these people – some became disabled, many died.
