Due to the high judgment in the power grid, the Andrius solar power plant cannot produce electricity. A solar power plant cannot produce electricity directly on sunny days.

“I have started the power plant, but the flow of generated energy is irregular. Especially when it is necessary to start producing electricity. Just when the sun rises, I get a message – too high voltage in the ESO network. You cannot produce. You invest in a power plant, but you cannot use it,” says Andrius.

He says that sometimes the power plant does not work for up to five hours a day. According to the owner of the power plant, this happens because there is a fault in the network or because the regulation of the network is disturbed.

Also in Lithuania, users complain about similar problems on social networks. The Lithuanian electricity distribution company ESO denies that the shutdown of the solar power plants is their fault. The company invites you to contact ESO to identify problems and find solutions. The reasons can be very different.

Rasa Juodkiene, public relations project manager of the energy distribution operator ESO, says that the system is probably shutting down because the neighbors use a trick to transfer more energy to the network than allowed.

“Each producing consumer must produce as much as the technical specifications dictate. It is very important to follow these rules. Otherwise, let’s say, I produce as much as allowed, but my neighbor exceeds the allowed production capacity: he transfers more electricity to the grid than he should, and our power plants are shut down,” explains Juodkiene.

The president of the Solar Energy Association, Andrias Karazin, is surprised by this explanation, because the distribution operator can determine in its system who is producing too much. “If a person installs an inverter that is more powerful than declared, ESO even imposes fines,” says Karazin.

He also points out that in situations where the grid does not accept electricity, the solution is a battery. Part of the electricity in sunny weather is diverted to the battery and does not need to interact with the grid.

Currently, 86,000 households are generating solar energy, while the remaining 16,000 are private sector companies and organizations. Lithuania aims to create 300,000 generators by 2030.
