On Forest Day, visitors are welcome on the Post Island until 5 p.m

Today, the traditional Forest Day is taking place on Post Island. This year, the event “Forest comes to Jelgava!” organized by the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Sciences of the Latvian University of Biosciences and Technologies (LBTU) the motto is “Forest in change”. Citizens are invited to learn about the forest and related industries, to gain valuable knowledge about forest products and the diversity of their use, as well as to get to know the wide spectrum of professions employed in the industry and educational opportunities. Entry to the event is free. Visitors are welcome on the Post Island until 5 p.m.

In the morning, the event was opened with a musical welcome by the Jelgava 4th High School brass band “Rota” led by conductor Agra Celm. Andris Rāviņš, the chairman of Jelgava city council, addressed the participants of the event. He praised the contribution of the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Sciences to the organization of this festival, which gives the people of Jelgava the opportunity to gain new knowledge about trees, the forest, and the products that come from the wealth of our Latvia. “This is clearly a future-oriented event, as our responsibility is to raise knowledgeable and skilled forest managers. And this is a great opportunity for children and young people to see with their own eyes what grows in the forest, what techniques are used, what research is being done and what we can make from wood,” said A. Rāviņš.

The event brings together more than 30 companies and organizations from the forest and related industries, which offer visitors informative and creative activities, as well as many things to try themselves. For example, make a wooden birdcage, recognize different species of trees, poisonous plants found in the forest, test the flexibility and strength of plywood in the ladder challenge, step into logging techniques, observe how a harvester is used, determine the distance to objects yourself, using various geodetic methods.

It should be noted that the event is held with the aim of educating the public about the wood and non-wood values ​​obtained as a result of Latvian forest and natural resource management, their application, the importance of various related industries in forest management and the development of a healthy society. The event “Forest comes to Jelgava” is organized by the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Sciences of LBTU in cooperation with the municipality of Jelgava, the institution “Culture”, organizations and companies of Latvian forest and related industries, educational institutions of the industry, as well as craftsmen and individual workers. Forest Days is supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Forest Development Fund.
