This year’s Riga summer cultural program is designed as a set of diverse events in August – the month of Riga’s birthday celebrations. This year, the Riga summer cultural program will be held under the slogan “Enjoy, grow, multiply!”, inviting every resident of Riga and city visitor not only to enjoy a rich cultural program, but also to explore, participate and sing the name of Riga together.

The purpose of the program is to continue contemporary and interdisciplinary cultural events in various neighborhoods of Riga, which update the history and culture of the specific neighborhood, as well as to offer a topical program involving citizens and provoking civic activity.

“We are happy to continue Riga’s summer cultural traditions, strengthening both the identity of the neighborhoods and increasingly involving contemporary culture as an integral part of the cultural life of a modern European city,” emphasizes Laima Geikina, head of the Education, Culture and Sports Committee of Riga City Council.

In August, the following events will take place on both banks of the Daugava: Left Bank Festival on August 3 in Uzvara Park, Right Bank Festival on August 10 in Dauderu Park, traditional Neighborhood Festival events on August 24 in Nordeķu Park and Dreilinkaln, Musical Park programs (Dzegužkalns Park stage on Wednesdays, Vērmanes Garden stage on Thursdays) , in Old Riga will be able to dance in the green ball on August 2.

The culmination of all summer events will take place on Saturday, August 17 – at the celebration of Riga’s 823rd birthday on November 11 at the waterfront and in Old Riga, where you will be able to watch a wide musical program and participate in various activities, as well as get to know the Latvian culinary heritage and experience a renewed festival of street musicians. On August 16 and 17, everyone is invited to enjoy the live fire “Garden of Light” in Victory Park, and on August 17 and 18 to watch the traditional “Krasti macha” on the Esplanade.

At the end of the program of summer events, on August 31, the “Night of the Ancient Fire” campaign will also be joined at Vecāķu and Daugavgrīva beaches in the seaside neighborhoods of Riga, confirming the common commitment to take care of the Baltic Sea.

The organization of the biggest events of the program has been delegated to the cultural institutions of Riga municipality, and the organizers will be selected as a result of the procurement procedure.

Dāvis Stalts, the head of the Culture Commission of the Riga City Council, emphasizes that the main difference from previous years’ Riga cultural offer is the greater concentration of festivities in August, instead of entertainment throughout the summer, which gives the cultural institutions of the Riga Municipality the opportunity to prepare a higher quality and more diverse offer. “This year, we are returning to the waterfront, but with a completely new and different identity, which people may have experienced there in the past. Two newly opened parks have a special place in these celebrations, the meaningful revitalization of which will begin directly with this year’s Riga birthday celebrations,” said Stalts.

Funds in the amount of 1,468,000 euros are planned for the implementation of measures in 2024.

The events of the program are planned from August 1 to 31 of this year.
