On Friday, April 26, the Ministry of Education and Science (MES) has invited the management of state universities and industry organizations to participate in the round table discussion “Academic ethics in higher education”, which will highlight the risks of power relations and how to promote a safe educational environment. The management of state universities, as well as representatives from university councils and industry organizations will participate in the discussion.

The purpose of the round table discussion organized by the Ministry of Education and Culture is to analyze and discover tools for promoting honesty, trust and respect in the academic process, in order to ensure a safe and secure educational environment for teaching staff and students, free from physical and emotional abuse.

The Minister of Education and Science will deliver the opening speech at the event Anda Chakshabut in the opening lecture of the discussion on the most important principles of academic ethics and international experience, the emeritus professor of the University of Latvia will present her vision Skaidrite Lasmane.

In the following three consecutive discussions, the invited representatives of universities and industry organizations will discuss the improvement of the ethics codes of universities and the tasks of academic ethics commissions, the improvement of the competence of teaching staff in matters of academic ethics, as well as the need for regulatory regulations. The first topic of the discussion on the code of ethics and ethics commissions will be introduced by the Vice-Rector of Studies of the University of Latvia (LU) Kristine Strada-Rosenberg. Presenting the experience of Riga Stradins University (RSU) in improving the competence of teaching staff, the foreword of the second topic will be given by the associate professor, director of the Pedagogical Development Center of RSU Nora Janson-Ratinika. On the other hand, the topic of discussion on the regulatory framework, the current situation in universities and the next steps in the implementation of improvements will be outlined by the Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Culture for Human Capital, Science and Innovation Development Jānis Paiders. In conclusion, the director of the Department of Higher Education, Science and Innovation of the Ministry of Education and Culture will outline the further actions and tasks Diana Laipniece. The discussion will be moderated by a journalist Janis Krevics.

Rectors or management representatives of state universities will participate in the round table discussion, as well as representatives from the councils of state universities, the Council of Rectors, the Latvian Students’ Union, the Association of Latvian Universities, the Council of Higher Education, the Office of the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Culture. The event will take place in person at the Innovation Center of the University of Latvia LUMIC, Kalpaka bulvāri 4, Riga.
