On April 24, the first “We can do more!” council of public organizations of persons with disabilities took place this year. sitting. This year the Council has a jubilee – it turns five years old. Opening the meeting, the Chairperson of the Council, Anna Stankeviča, informed that a lot has been accomplished during this time, new NGOs have been admitted to the Council, joint work is being coordinated, and a constructive dialogue is taking place with the city authorities.

The meeting was also attended by frequent guests of the “We can do more” Council: Valērijs Kononovs, Deputy Chairman of the Daugavpils City Council, and Viktorija Sporāne-Hudojana, Deputy Chairman of the Social Issues Committee.

Commenting on the Council’s work, V. Sporāne-Hudojana stated: “It is very important that this council exists. Thanks to it, associations together with local government representatives from various fields can more effectively solve socially important issues for people with disabilities. The most striking example is the special swimming area created in Stropos for people with disabilities. I will also mention last year’s beautiful concert at the Palace of Culture, which was organized together with the Social Service in honor of the World Day of People with Disabilities, when the whole city saw how many talents there are among them. Many thanks to the leaders of the organizations and their teams for their work for the benefit of the citizens, colleagues – for helping people with special needs. From the bottom of my heart, I wish everyone health, as well as productive cooperation within the Council.”

During the meeting, various issues were discussed: the problem of the lack of special parking spaces in the city, the opportunity for Daugavpils NGOs to participate together with the Municipal Authority of the Upper Daugava Region in the “TAKA” project dedicated to sailing, the participation of disabled organizations in the upcoming City Festival and much more.

V. Kononovs, deputy chairman of the Daugavpils municipal council, emphasized: “Public organizations of people with disabilities, by uniting in the “We can do more” Council, now defend the rights and interests of the disabled much more actively and effectively. I value our cooperation with the Council very highly. The initiatives of its members help the municipality improve the urban environment, increase the quality of life for people with disabilities in Daugavpils. Therefore, we are open to communication, always trying to find solutions to the issues raised by the council. I would also like to appeal to my colleagues, municipal employees, with a request to be even more attentive to the requests and problems of people with disabilities, dealing with solving them in priority order.”

The next We Can Do More council meeting will be held in the summer.
