Saturday, April 27, at At 12.00, the Ventspils region final of the National Read-Aloud Competition will take place in the children’s library, where thirteen 5th-grade students from Ventspils city and county schools will meet to fight for the title of champion and the right to represent the region in the Kurzeme intermediate final, from which three finalists will be nominated for the national final.
The origins of the national reading aloud competition in Latvia can be traced back to September 2017. It is an initiative of the Children’s Literature Center of the National Library of Latvia. The National Read Aloud Competition is a competition for 11-12 year old boys and girls to encourage children’s interest in reading and books. The competition originated in the Netherlands more than 20 years ago.
The winner of the final of the Ventspils region will be determined by three members of the jury. The jury will evaluate the participant’s diction, reading pace, ability to captivate the audience and create emotional contact, ability to use their voice.
The competition takes place in four rounds – at the local school (library) level, the regional final, the intermediate final in Kurzeme and the national final in Riga. The winner of the national final will receive the title of Reading Champion of the Republic of Latvia and will become the Children’s Director of the Latvian National Library – an inspiration for one year. The director’s duties include participation in various events, evaluation of children’s literature and library services, expressing opinion to the media. The winners will receive a trophy, which will be in the school the student represents for a year.
