Within the current multi-year budget, Latvia receives around 10 billion euros.

Valdis Dombrovskis: “The current multi-year budget is until 2027. The question is what will happen starting in 2028. Of course, these will be very serious discussions, for example, about the future of the EU’s Cohesion Policy. There were similar discussions before this multi-year budget from 2021-2027. for the year. There were also concerns that Cohesion funding would not be continued, but we see that it is being continued and that Latvia as a whole receives about 10 billion euros in this multi-year budget.”

Speaking about the days ahead, Dombrovskis says that the enlargement of the EU will introduce certain adjustments in the issue of funds. “Additional funds will be needed for new countries, including Ukraine as a candidate country. Latvia also once received funds from the so-called pre-accession fund as a candidate country. The same can be expected from the other countries that are currently candidate countries and are conducting negotiations on joining the EU.”

The executive vice-president of the European Commission and the candidate for the position of Member of the European Parliament do not hide that, taking into account the challenges in various areas, there will certainly be discussions about whether the EU needs a larger budget than before.

“To a large extent, it will be a question of how much of an EU budget we can agree on, as the challenges have increased both in the area of security, but also in relation to the continuation of the green transformation of the European economy, and also in relation to enlargement.”
