UNSYMPATHETIC OBJECT. The old gas tank has become a slum where people have dumped rubbish, including tyres, windscreens, empty oil cans and slate. Imanta Kaziļuna photo

Every year, as the Great Cleanup approaches, one of our long-time readers draws attention to the abandoned gas station slum on Rūpniekibs Street, Aizkraukle. Is there really nothing that can be done to remove the unsympathetic frame full of garbage?

Content will continue after the ad.

Although the facility is on the outskirts of the city, it is still a thorn in the side. “It’s not like no one walks past here. Every day, people come to the garages, go to work, because there are several companies in the area, visit the veterinary clinic. The municipality got involved in the arrangement of the so-called Chinese slum. Or wouldn’t it be time to harvest this object?” asks the reader.

Aigars Zīmelis, manager of Aizkraukle town and parish, explains that the object is in private territory. The slum near the “Beta” store created a danger, children went there to climb. Since the old gas tank does not pose such a danger, the municipality does not plan to intervene in the cleaning of the property. A. Zīmelis, however, promises to contact its owners, as well as to pass on the information to the municipal police officers, so that attention is paid to this place.
