Its main error, which was already pointed out by the Academy of Sciences in its message, was in the size of the doses chosen for re-vaccination. The doses were too small. Also their frequency and period of time after the last vaccine, chosen wrongly.

“That period was determined to be too long and the dose with which the revaccination was given was too small. At that time, there was no evidence that the desired protective effect could be achieved with one fourth of the full dose of the vaccination course,” Kalvinņš states.

Vaccination was also started too late for political reasons.

“These mistakes lead to the fact that people lose faith and unreasonably lose faith that vaccination really helps. And it helped!” he says.

“That will be taken into account now when we talk about Disease X, which is now getting a huge amount of attention. And rightly so, because it is clear that there will be an epidemic, but we don’t know what and when! All that we learned during covid, those mistakes were not made on purpose, they were European recommendations,” Ludmila Vīksna, adviser to the board of the Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS) on infectious disease strategy, joins the discussion.
