Currently, Kalniņš has signed an order for the creation of three new battalions.
The first is a high readiness reserve infantry battalion within the Mechanized Brigade. The battalion will start operating in June to ensure the inclusion of soldiers retired from the national defense service in this unit. The battalion will currently be deployed in Adaži.
It is the first of five new battalions to form a more effective mobilization reserve. Kalniņš told the LETA agency that such battalions will be in each brigade and each unit will have 1,000 to 1,400 soldiers – graduates of the national defense service and reserve soldiers. The remaining four units are planned to be created by 2028, and they will basically be located in Selia.
The second new special support battalion was created under the direct authority of the NBS and will be oriented towards high technologies to ensure full information acquisition, correct and timely decision-making. It is planned that this battalion will reach operational readiness at the beginning of 2025.
The third new battalion will be part of the National Guard and it will ensure the increase of electronic warfare capabilities. It will combine the capabilities of the National Guard in the field of cyber defense.
These two battalions will have 300 to 600 soldiers each.
