On March 26, in Mežapark, Riga, in the Kokaru hall, an event was held to launch the Great Cleanup, gathering cleanup coordinators from all over Latvia. At the event, with a discussion on the importance of nature conservation for the sustainability of humanity, pre-cleaning month was announced and an opportunity was opened to register your chosen cleaning site On the map of Great Talka. Those present were greeted with speeches by the supporters of the Great Talk, the organizers and the youth choir “Voices”.

This year, the Great Talk will be held on April 27. In order to successfully plan the activities of the cleaning day, everyone is invited to take a look On the map of Great Talka www.talkas.lv, register your cleaning place or choose one of the already added places and events. As usual, both cleaning and beautification cleanups are organized, as well as the opportunity for everyone to apply for a solo cleanup (including DUO and family cleanups).

The coordinators of the Great Cleanup in their county or city coordinate and are responsible for the cleanup in the entire administrative territory. Vita Jaunzeme, head of Liela Talkas, addressed the coordinators at the launch event and emphasized: “Thank you very much for what you have done for seventeen years. Thanks to the selfless and persistent work and investment of the coordinators, Latvia has become cleaner and greener. Only together we can do it!”

VARAM Minister Inga Bērziņa addressed the audience: “Everyone has to start with themselves. What we all do together is very important, as well as what we do individually in our house, farm, village and city. The Great Talk as a tradition of Vistulavia has developed over the years and its success is based on the understanding of people’s responsibility towards our environment and the obligation to preserve it for future generations. By cleaning up the environment, we clean up our minds and open our hearts at the same time.”

The Latvian Association of Local Governments has supported the Great Talk since its inception, its chairman Gints Kaminskis, noting the importance of municipalities and local government coordinators in the implementation process of the Great Talk, reveals: “We are proud and pleased that year after year municipalities actively participate in this tradition, so that our environment and daily lives the room should be clean, healthy and organized. Thanks to joint work, cleaning is no longer just a story about collecting waste and tidying up the environment. It is a story about creating a better future today – by improving the surroundings, preserving natural values ​​and increasing green-thinking habits in various areas of life. Together with residents, active cleaners, a message is created for future generations about care and respectful attitude towards living space, fellow human beings and nature.”

The Great Talk is organized by the association “Pēdas LV” in cooperation with the Latvian State Forests, the Union of Local Governments of Latvia, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, and the Association of European Latvians. Lielā Talka is the largest non-governmental movement in Latvia, which is based on voluntary participation in environmental cleanup, recovery and beautification, creating cohesion, positivity and a sense of a job well done. The tradition of the Great Cleanup began 16 years ago – with the cleanup on September 13, 2008, which was a gift from the population to Latvia on its 90th birthday. Over the course of 16 years, approximately 500,000 participants have participated in the cleanup, and compared to the first years of the cleanup, the amount of waste has decreased by more than half. In recent years, Liela Talka emphasizes the close connection between environmental education and the environment and human health, and more and more landscape and yard beautification works are also taking place.

In 2023, a total of 1,339 cleanup sites were applied for: 894 public waste collection and 445 cleanup cleanups, as well as 183 Solo cleanups.
