In the contest “Latvia’s best school caterer” organized by the Association of Diet and Nutrition Specialists of Latvia (LDUSA) in 2023/2024, secondary school 34 of Riga won, obtaining the highest number of points in the overall evaluation of all regions.

In Kurzeme, Liepāja Ezerkrast Primary School was recognized as the best caterer, in Latgale Riebiņu Middle School won the highest number of points, in Vidzeme – Laurenču Primary School, in Zemgale – Pļaviņu Middle School, and in Riga – Riga 6th Secondary School.
“This year, the jury had a very interesting job. First of all, unfortunately quite a few schools from those whose parents had applied for the competition did not comply with the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers, thus they were automatically excluded from further participation. But what really pleased us was the creativity and diversity of the cooks! We especially want to praise the overall winner – Riga 34th Secondary School – which not only introduced a vegetarian day, but also offers children dishes such as bulgur,” says LDUSA board chairperson Guna Bīlande, adding that more and more school cooks are not afraid to experiment and children get to know different foods. such as curry sauces, green peas, etc., and various seasonal fruits and vegetables. In several schools, thematic days are organized in cooperation with, for example, history teachers, or national dishes of other nations are enjoyed. Of course, great pleasure!
It should be noted that in certain regions, several applied schools had problems with the implementation of the rules, because the menus did not meet the regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers and children were offered meals with a relatively large amount of sugar and salt.

Mārtiņš Cimermanis, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Rural Consultation and Education Center (LLKC): “Sometimes it seems that it is not really important where the food came from, its taste and the culture of the food, even though the students mark it as the most important in their surveys. Therefore, school cooks must be talked about much more loudly, so that cooks with their world and values do not disappear. That’s why we support the competition and nothing will end after the competition – we will continue to offer educational activities to cooks, in which they will be able to gain new knowledge and raise their self-confidence.”
This year, the competition was organized with the support of LLKC and the winners of the competition are pampered with various gifts, which are provided to the chef teams by “Balticovo”, “Gudrie graudi”, “Rimi Baltic”, “Watermerlon”, “Food Union”, “Gemoss”, but for the gift delivery is handled by VAS “Latvijas pasts”. On the other hand, Baltic Beach Hotel & SPA will give the team of the overall winners a rest and overnight stay at the hotel, a visit to the SPA area, as well as a delicious breakfast, while the regional winners will have the opportunity to visit the SPA area to take a breather from their daily duties.
Last year, Zenta Mauriņa Grobiņa Secondary School won the competition “The best school caterer in Latvia”, which received the highest rating from the jury.
