NATO continuously monitors the development of the situation around all alliance territories. “At the moment when NATO has information that a situation is developing in a region that could lead to a crisis, or that military forces are being accumulated there, then we already have tools that allow us to demonstrate that we will be ready if someone could think of challenging security of Latvia or NATO member states,” said Riekstiņš.

He reminded that before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, NATO already had information about such preparations for several months. So a sudden attack on such a large scale is not possible without NATO noticing it.

Riekstiņš confirmed that NATO’s plans also considered the option of a smaller-scale but swift attack. Latvia would have enough forces to repel it, he said.

If necessary, NATO has the ability to “deploy” additional capabilities very quickly. “At the moment when Ukraine was attacked in February 2022, Latvia received additional forces from the allies literally 24 hours a day,” said the Latvian ambassador.
