The installation and testing process of the new security screening equipment at the Estonian capital’s airport has been completed a week earlier than originally planned. From now on, passengers flying from Tallinn will no longer need to remove liquids, laptops and other large electrical devices from their carry-on luggage at the check-in lines.

According to Tarvi Pihlakas, head of the airport’s Aviation Security Department, the new equipment is expected to reduce the time passengers spend at security control.

Also, the airport has also introduced changes regarding the volume of liquids allowed in hand luggage.

Namely, if until now liquids could be transported in containers of up to 100 milliliters, placed in a resealable plastic bag, now it will be possible to transport liquids in packages of up to two liters.

This means that you will now be able to carry large tubes of shampoo, sunscreen and toothpaste, as well as soft drinks and liquid food products in your hand luggage.

At the same time, passengers will always have to make sure that the total weight of hand luggage does not exceed the limits set by the airlines.

Passengers are also advised to note that not all airports have the same restrictions on liquids as in Tallinn.

Separate rules also apply to aerosols, and their maximum allowed volume in hand luggage will be 500 milliliters from now on. In total, one passenger will be allowed to bring up to two liters of aerosol in hand luggage.

So far, Riga Airport has installed only a few such modern baggage screening devices – they are available in the screening line for families, in the fast security screening line (Fast track), as well as in the VIP area.

Testing of the equipment is currently ongoing in order to offer more convenient baggage checks to a wider range of airport visitors in the future.

Also, at the airport of the capital, the rules regarding liquids in hand luggage are still in force – they are allowed to be transported in containers of up to 100 milliliters, packed in a transparent, resealable one-liter bag.
