“We now have strong evidence that the recording was not authentic,” Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough told reporters at a news conference Thursday. “It has been determined that the recording was created using artificial intelligence technology.”

Dajon Darien, 31, was arrested Thursday on charges of stalking, theft, disrupting a school and retaliating against a witness after a month-long investigation.

The case highlights the potential seriousness of misuse of artificial intelligence, something experts have been warning about for some time.

“What’s particularly troubling here is that this is a Baltimore school principal. It’s not Taylor Swift. This is not Joe Biden. It’s not Elon Musk. It’s just some guy trying to live his life,” said Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in digital forensics.

Investigators found that Darien’s alleged motive was to retaliate against Eiswert for disagreements over Darien’s “performance challenges.”

Eiswerth had opened an investigation against Darien for allegedly misappropriating $1,916 in school funds, as well as firing the coach without his consent.

The fake audio recording led to Eiswerth’s temporary suspension, a wave of hate mail on social media and significant disruption to school work.

Darien was released on $5,000 bail. His court date is set for June 11.

This case raises questions about how to regulate the use of artificial intelligence and protect people from this type of abuse.
